Chapter One
The Last Signal
The Ardent dropped out of fold-space at 0317 station time, and Kael Orin was already awake.
He’d been awake for the last six hours of transit, sitting in the pilot’s cradle with his boots off and a cold cup of synthetic coffee cradled in both hands, watching the navigation display count down to zero. This was a habit from the war — the soldier’s instinct that the moment of arrival was also the moment of maximum vulnerability, and sleeping through it was a kind of surrender. Old habits died slowly if they died at all.
The fold collapsed with the usual lurch in his inner ear. The stars reappeared. And Kael set down his coffee and looked out the forward viewport at the system that the ISC had been calling Anomaly Site Orion-1 for the past four years.
It was not what he had expected.
He wasn’t sure what he had expected — not exactly. Barren rock, probably. A dead system with a dead star, the kind of place that looked like a mistake in the otherwise legible grammar of the cosmos.
